NUNNERY SCHOOL
From 2010 to 2021, School Association Lo-Manthang continuously supported the Nunnery School "Tsunmai Lobdra" in Tsarang and Pokhara with an average of 20 students, thus enabling education for girls in Mustang. The school, which is run as a boarding school, provides the girls with an in-depth education in Buddhist religion in addition to basic schooling. This is a continuation of old traditions; there have always been nunneries in Mustang that provided education for girls. Today, the older schoolgirls perform prayer ceremonies, known as pujas, in the households of the local population and are greatly appreciated for this. After completing seven years of school, the girls can decide whether they want to attend secondary school or return to their families. Many former schoolgirls go on to attend Sakya College in India.
The school association took over the catering for the pupils up to and including 2021, including the remuneration of the housemother. In addition, irregular expenses such as a wooden floor or new computers for computer classes were supported. Travel costs were also covered to enable the college students to return home to India during the summer holidays.
We ended our support for the Nunnery School at the end of 2021. The school has become well established in the region, is well organised and is highly appreciated by the local population. The high priest Chogye Trichen Rinzin Paljor Rinpoche is moving to Tsarang in 2023, when the newly built monastery will also be inaugurated. He will be responsible for the school management and financing of the school in future, so we know that the school will continue to run well. Our commitment has helped to establish the school and will bear fruit in the long term!
